Keeping Junior Sailors as They Become Teenagers
The teenage years are when clubs lose sailors. How to keep them engaged through the tricky transition.

The teenage years are the great leak in the sailing pipeline. Young people who loved the water as children drift away as other interests, exams and social pressures compete. Keeping them is one of the biggest wins available to any club.
Give them ownership
Teenagers stay where they have a role and a voice. Involving them in decisions, events and even coaching gives them ownership and a reason to keep coming.
Create the right social scene
For teenagers, the social side often matters as much as the sailing. A welcoming peer group and their own space and events keep them connected to the club.
Offer a pathway into instructing
Assistant instructor roles give teenagers status, a little income and a genuine future at the club. Many of your best future instructors are the teenagers you keep now.
Balance challenge and fun
Teenagers want to be stretched but not lectured. Racing, adventure sailing and new disciplines keep it exciting, while too much formality can drive them away.
Stay flexible around their lives
Exams, jobs and busy schedules make rigid commitments hard. Flexible sessions and understanding keep the door open through the years when life gets complicated.
