Developing Your Instructors with CPD
Continuing professional development keeps your team sharp, safe and loyal. How to build a CPD culture that pays for itself.

Continuing professional development is not a luxury or a nice-to-have — it is how you keep teaching standards high, safety knowledge current, and your best people from drifting to a centre that invests in them. A centre that develops its team keeps its team, and keeps improving the product it sells. CPD is one of the rare investments that improves safety, quality and retention all at once.

Make development expected, not optional
Build CPD into the rhythm of the whole year: standardisation sessions, first-aid refreshers, new-discipline training, and coaching on the craft of teaching itself. When development is a normal, expected part of the job rather than an occasional treat, everyone improves together and nobody feels singled out or left behind.
Support progression up the pathway
Actively help instructors move up the RYA instructor pathway and into new disciplines they are keen to teach. Funding or subsidising qualifications is one of the most cost-effective retention tools you have, because it ties an instructor's own ambitions to staying with you, and expands what your centre can safely deliver at the same time.
Learn from each other
Your most experienced instructors hold an enormous amount of hard-won knowledge that usually leaves with them if you never capture it. Peer observation, shared debriefs and structured mentoring spread that expertise across the whole team cheaply and effectively, and make your senior people feel recognised as leaders rather than just extra pairs of hands.
Coach the soft skills
Teaching, communication, group management and handling difficult situations are every bit as coachable as sailing technique — and they often make the bigger difference to whether a learner enjoys their course and books again. Do not neglect them in favour of purely technical training; the human side is frequently where the real gains are.
Record it
Keep a clear record of the development each instructor has completed. It supports your teaching standards, makes your recognition inspection straightforward, underpins each person's own progression, and quietly shows your team that you take their growth seriously — which is exactly the message that keeps good instructors around.
